Columbia University professor discusses Iran drone attack on Israel
I was interviewed by NY1 April 13th Columbia University professor discusses Iran drone attack on Israel
PLEASE MAKE SURE READ the clarification below
It is important for me to add the following clarification
1/5: Friends have pointed out that I may have unintentionally suggested that both pre and post-revolutionary Iranian regimes were uniformly anti-Israel (h/t Adel). I'd like to correct this and highlight the significant differences between the Shah’s Iran and the Islamic Republic.
2/5: True, Iran opposed the 1947 partition plan, the Shah’s regime didn't formally recognize Israel, and there was widespread anti-Israel sentiment among Iranian elites and society. These points were emphasized during my brief interview.
3/5: However, from as early as 1950 the Shah de facto recognized Israel. As part of the Western and US-aligned bloc, Iran collaborated closely with Israel, avoiding any hostile stance like that seen in the Islamic Republic post-1979.
4/5: The Shah navigated complex geopolitical interests and internal sentiments carefully, maintaining a pragmatic, albeit unofficial, pro-Israel policy without fully antagonizing anti-Israel factions within Iran.
5/5: After the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iran's policy towards Israel turned from unofficial support to overt hostility. This policy shift was starkly illustrated by Iran-backed military actions against Israel on October 7 and in last night’s missile attack by Iran on Israel.
PS. On pre-1979 Iran Israel relations I recommend Chapter 11 of Heroes to Hostages by Firoozeh Kashani-Sabet “A Political Minefield: Iran between Israel and Pan-Arabism”
